Slime pet (in Slovenian)

Get ready for a little scientific adventure in the Green Lab! In this children’s workshop, kids will get up close with slime mold – a strange yet fascinating organism that proves smart behavior doesn’t always require a brain.

Together, participants will observe the slimy, network-like creature as it slowly moves, searches for food, avoids light and dry areas, and even “remembers” where it has been. Although it may seem simple, slime mold is a unique organism that spends most of its life as a single, very large cell and adapts surprisingly well to its environment.

Children will become young scientists by preparing a simple nutrient medium, placing the slime mold on it, and observing how it grows and spreads. The workshop is highly hands-on and experiential, with a strong focus on safe handling and basic lab practices, presented in a playful and understandable way.

They will observe the slime mold under a microscope, gently provoke it, and watch its responses. They will test which foods it prefers – sweet, salty, sour, or spicy – and see if it can solve simple “puzzles.”

At the end of the workshop, participants will take home their own living culture – their very own “slime pet” – and continue observing it at home. This workshop encourages curiosity, careful observation, and critical thinking, showing children that science can be alive, tangible, and above all, fun.

This workshop is designed for children aged 7 to 12.

Participants should arrive 15 minutes before the program starts in the main lobby of Center Rog. Please store personal belongings in the lockers, which the mentor will show you. Do not be late, as late entry cannot be guaranteed and disrupts the workflow.

The program is conducted in Slovenian, except where stated otherwise.

If the workshop is canceled, you will be informed two days before the scheduled start.

If you cannot attend, the fee is non-refundable and the date cannot be changed, but your spot can be transferred to another person if you notify us at least 24 hours in advance at zeleni@center-rog.si.
