Winning Solution for the Memorial in the Park of the Erased
Among the 12 submissions received for the open call for ideas for the memorial in the Park of the Erased by the Center Rog, the jury unanimously selected the design that stands out in its expressiveness beyond all other proposals.
The winning design, resembling the upper part of the letter ć, was created by Vuk Ćosić, Aleksander Vujović, and Irena Woelle.
The authors proposed a symbolic memorial that is not a traditional monument but rather a typographic meditative instrument intended for play, rest, and reflection on society. The design is based on the political reality of the 1990s, when, following the breakup of the former Yugoslavia, 25,671 people were erased from the permanent resident register in Slovenia. This was symbolically represented by the letter ć, which was frequently erased from residents' surnames and replaced by the hard c.
The memorial, which is expected to be installed in the Park of the Erased by the end of 2023, "symbolically returns the exiled letter and thus shows that Ljubljana wishes to be the capital of solidarity and coexistence," the authors explained, adding that "this small letter is a great monument to multicultural Ljubljana."
