Easter egg basket (in Slovenian)

Join us for a basket-weaving workshop, where we will create traditional baskets in which we can proudly display Easter eggs on the festive table.

During the workshop, we will explore the history of basketry in Slovenia, learn about basic tools and natural materials, and practice preparing the materials. You will learn how to make hazel splints, assemble the basket frame, and weave your own festive basket. Special attention will be given to working with hazel, precision, and understanding the material. Through hands-on work, participants will also develop patience and an aesthetic sense.

Basketry is a creative, relaxing, and practical activity. The workshop welcomes anyone interested in handicrafts and working with natural materials, preserving traditional knowledge, and sustainable design approaches. It is ideal for those who want to develop practical skills in design, craft, or deepen their connection with nature.

The workshop consists of four weekly sessions, each lasting four hours:

1. Introduction to basketry – viewing basketry pieces, history of basketry in Slovenia, presentation of tools and materials, and material preparation.
2. Making hazel splints – hands-on work creating hazel splints.
3. Preparing the basket frame – crafting and decorating the base, cutting, drilling, sanding, gluing pegs, and making handles.
4. Finishing the basket – weaving the basket and assembling the handles.

What is a hazel splint?

A hazel splint is a thin, flat strip of hazel wood, made by carefully splitting and peeling hazel branches. It is a fundamental component in traditional basketry, valued for its flexibility and durability, used for weaving baskets, egg baskets, and other functional or decorative items. Producing splints requires special skills, patience, and a good sense of the material.

Prior Experience?

NO, no prior experience is needed. The workshop is suitable for beginners as well as those who wish to build on existing skills. Participants must be at least 18 years old.

About the Mentor

Janko Marinč is a teacher at the Secondary School in Kočevje, specializing in woodworking. His passion for wood and cultural heritage led him to basketry – he completed a three-year basketry school at the Rokodelski Center Ribnica and obtained the NPK basketmaker certificate at the Pomelaj cooperative. He frequently works as a demonstrator and mentor at fairs and workshops in Slovenia and abroad. His specialty is hazel splints, from which he weaves baskets of various shapes, bread and fruit baskets – some of which hold the Art & Craft certificate.

Workshops costing more than €100 can be paid in two installments. Payment in two installments is possible at the “Made in Rog” shop or via bank transfer after receiving a proforma invoice by emailing tajnistvo@center-rog.si.

Participants should arrive 15 minutes before the program begins in the main lobby of Center Rog. Please store personal belongings in the lockers, which the mentor will show you. Do not be late, as late entry cannot be guaranteed and disrupts the workflow.

The program is conducted in Slovenian, except where stated otherwise.
If the workshop is canceled, you will be informed two days before the scheduled start.
If you cannot attend, the fee is non-refundable and the date cannot be changed, but your spot can be transferred to another person if you notify us at least 24 hours in advance at les@center-rog.si.
