For all those looking for creative ways to use even the smallest fabric scraps – this workshop is perfect for you. Unwanted fabric leftovers will be transformed into unique “cut quilts” with rich texture. By layering materials that would otherwise end up in the trash, we will create entirely new usable items for everyday use.

What will we do?

By layering scraps that would otherwise be discarded, we will create completely new textiles with a pronounced texture. The so-called quilts will then be transformed into bags or cases.

In the process, we will learn the principles of working with layered fabric and the special “cutting” technique of the quilt, which gives it a distinctive texture. Additionally, we will also learn the basics of using a sewing machine and the basics of sustainable design – how to create new, functional items from leftovers.

We invite everyone who would like to learn a new technique and transform textile waste into a beautiful new product. The cut quilt has an interesting property – with every wash, it becomes softer and fluffier as the edges of the layers gently bloom. Thus, the product not only does not lose value, but also improves with use. This means that the bags and cases made in the workshop will develop an even more unique and warm appearance over time.

If you have a pile of fabric at home that you do not know how to use, bring it with you. We will also provide basic materials and enough fabric scraps.

The workshop will be conducted in English.

Workshop Dates

Time: 16:00 – 20:00

About the Mentor:

The workshop will be led by Chiaki Shimizu, a designer in residence at Center Rog, fashion designer, and contemporary artist who explores the relationship between clothing, memory, and environment. She holds a PhD from Tokyo University of the Arts and has received international recognition, including the Grand Prize at Rokko Meets Art (2021) and second place at the World of WearableArt competition (2023). In her practice, she often transforms discarded textiles into new, meaningful forms.
