In the Jewelry Lab, we are preparing a masterclass in filigree jewelry making. Together, we will enter the world of one of the most delicate, demanding, and at the same time most enchanting goldsmithing techniques. Filigree is the art of “drawing with wire” – a technique that, with its lightness, precision, and lace-like structures, has fascinated cultures for centuries, from ancient Mediterranean civilizations to the Balkans and the Middle East. Today, filigree remains a symbol of craftsmanship, patience, and a deep understanding of materials.

In this masterclass, we will approach filigree comprehensively – from raw material to finished jewelry piece. We will start at the very source: casting a special silver alloy intended for filigree. From this, we will gradually roll and draw wire into different thicknesses, creating the fundamental building blocks of the technique. In the first session, we will craft our first ring from twisted wire, beginning to connect with the material, the rhythm of work, and the logic of filigree through practice.

In the second and third sessions, we will delve into the history and concepts of filigree. We will explore why filigree knowledge has long been considered prestigious and highly valued, and how its structure combines strength and lightness. We will focus on working with wire and its processing: flattening wire and understanding its function, traditional twisting, and combining twisting with rolling to create the basic material for characteristic filigree elements. Lace-like, delicate structures will emerge, while we explore form, rhythm, and expression.

Special attention will be given to filigree construction. We will examine the role of the frame, as almost every filigree piece starts with it. We will explore different concepts, construction methods, and ways to use the frame as the support of the entire composition. Then we will create classic filigree filler elements, such as the “eight,” “chor,” and “zog,” experimenting with variations. Participants will learn how to fill the frame meaningfully, balanced, and creatively. We will also address filigree soldering – the most technically demanding but crucial step, where patience and precision transform into a stable, refined piece of jewelry.

The fourth session will be dedicated to finishing the pieces, connecting the individual elements, presenting the work, and reflecting as a group.

Beyond creating a unique piece of jewelry, participants will gain a deeper understanding of filigree as a technique that teaches patience, focus, and respect for tradition – while opening space for contemporary, personal expression.
