Filigree is an ancient goldsmithing technique that originated in the civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Greece, and later developed significantly during the Byzantine and Medieval periods. It is based on shaping extremely fine gold or silver wires, which are combined into delicate, lace-like decorative patterns. The technique spread across the Mediterranean, the Balkans, and the Middle East, and is still valued today for its precision and ornamental beauty.

As part of Slovenian Jewelry Week 2026, Biljana Klekachkoska will present the filigree technique. The demonstration will include practical presentations of the technique and a conversation with the artist. The filigree process will be viewable live on a television screen during her demonstration.

About the Mentor

Biljana Klekachkoska is a jeweler from North Macedonia, creating jewelry for over 28 years. She is trained in the art of filigree and was a pioneer in the new wave of reviving and renewing this traditional technique in her country. Through her work as a jewelry designer, entrepreneur, and teacher, she has made a significant contribution to the emerging culture of jewelry-making and created pathways for young people to discover their passion for this craft.

She holds a Master’s degree (2022) in Jewelry and Gemology from the University of Applied Sciences in Trier, Idar-Oberstein. In 2022, she completed an internship at the Canellopoulos Museum in Athens, where she studied Byzantine goldsmithing techniques. For this, the American School of Classical Studies in Athens awarded her an additional scholarship in 2023.
