In the tufting workshop, we will enter the world of soft textures, vivid colors, and playful patterns. Tufting is a contemporary technique for creating textiles that combines artistic creativity and craft skills, lying somewhere between art and interior design. Using a tufting gun, we will create colorful and completely unique pieces that can be used as small rugs, wall decorations, or placemats.

What will we do?

We will start the workshop by exploring shapes and colors – from colored paper we will create a collage that will serve as the basis for our final design. Then we will transfer our designs onto a stretched canvas and bring them to life in soft textile form using the tufting gun. Each participant will have the opportunity to explore their own combination of colors and textures and create a piece that reflects personal style.

What will we learn?

During the process, we will learn the basics of tufting – from preparing the base and correctly using the tool to selecting yarn and shaping edges. We will also learn the principles of visual composition and how a limited color palette encourages creative thinking. At the same time, we will ensure safe handling of the equipment so that the technique can later be independently explored in the textile lab of Center Rog.

Tufting can be both relaxing and dynamic. Due to the rhythmic “popping” of the device, many describe it as an almost meditative experience. If the final piece is additionally trimmed and shaped, it results in surprising, playful, and entirely personal outcomes.

Join the workshop, where we will explore together how an idea becomes a tangible textile piece and demonstrate that art and functionality can intertwine into a beautiful soft story. No prior knowledge is required. The workshop will be conducted in English.

About the Mentor:

Daniela Doe is a French-Togolese graphic and textile designer living and working in Malmö, Sweden. She graduated in fashion design from the Architecture University of Lisbon and earned a master’s degree in communication design at the University of Fine Arts in Lisbon.

In her practice, she focuses on translating experimental graphic design into hand-tufted rugs and textiles. She combines traditional techniques such as tufting, embroidery, and printing with contemporary design, creating a dialogue between old and new. She explores how graphic design can, through traditional crafts, become a tangible and memorable experience for expressing graphic concepts.
